802.11
802.11 refers to a family of specifications developed by the IEEE* for wireless LAN technology.
802.11 specifies an over-the-air interface between a wireless client and a base station or between
two wireless clients. The IEEE´s 802 committee develops standards for local and wide area networks
(LANs and WANs). For example, the 802.3 committee develops standards for Ethernet-based wired
networks and the 802.11 committee develops standards for wireless local area networks (LAN).
There are several specifications in the 802.11 WLAN family. The main
differences are in distance compatibility and speed. The most popular
standard is the 802.11b which will give you the best connection most
of the time and the longest distance.
- 802.11 - Provides 1 or 2 Mbps transmission in the 2.4.
- 802.11a - Provides up to 54 Mbps in the 5GHz band.
- 802.11b
- Also referred to as WiFi. This is the most popular standrad.
- 802.11g - For WLANs operating in the 2.4 GHz frequency with a maximum data rate of 54 Mbps.
* Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The IEEE was formed in 1963 and is an organization
composed of engineers, scientists, and students. The IEEE is best known for developing standards
for the computer and electronics industry. In particular, the IEEE 802 standards for local-area
networks are widely followed.
