Wifi - 802.11b
In 2000, 802.11b became the standard wireless ethernet networking technology for
both business and home. The 802.11b or Wifi will give you a good connection most of the time and
at long distances. The Wireless LAN standard 802.11b is the the most popular standard at the moment (2004).
802.11b transfers data at rates up to 11 Mbps (megabits per second) and operates at
the same frequency as cordless phones and microwaves (2.4GHz). The operating range is
roughly 100 to 300 feet.
The successor of the WLAN 802.11b standard is 802.11a and it is designed to have faster speed
and operate at a different frequency. The 802.11b standard is still widely used.
An 802.11b wireless network adapter can operate in two modes. In infrastructure mode,
the traffic passes through a wireless ‘access point’. In a Ad-hoc mode the wireless
devices talk directly to each other (no need for a access point).
802.11b security
Any network adapter that comes within range of another 802.11b Wifi network adapter or access point
can connect to the network unless WEP – wireless encryption protocol – is enabled.
WEP is secure enough for most homes and business, but can be hacked. When you use WEP it
will slow down your Wifi network by 20-50%.
802.11b speed and range
802.11b or Wi-Fi wireless LAN operates in the 2.4 GHz spectrum with a bandwidth
of 11 Mbps (megabits per second). When you use WEP (wireless encryption protocol) the
speed of your network will slow down by approx. 20-50%.
With WiFi technology (802.11b or 802.11a) your data transmission rate becomes
slower as you move farther away from the access point. The 802.11b operating range is roughly
100 to 300 feet. Within 100 feet of the access point, your WiFi device will get about 11 Mbps
data rate. As you move farther away, that rate will drop down. Other factors to consider is
the antenna type and whether your network is in an open environment or in a building with lots
of walls and furniture. The WiFi signal does not penetrate metal, water or other dense materials.
