Ringtones or ring tones?
10.5.2003
Don't get confused about the namings; mobile ringtones, tones, ring
tones, ringingtones, ringer tones, tunes, melodies etc. - They all
mean the same thing - the sound that your mobile phone makes when
you have a call!
The quality of the sound is however dependent on things like phone
manufacturer, model and ringtone format. More musical ringtones are
called polyphonic ringtones. They are just like regular ringtones,
but they sound more like music. Polyphonic ringtones can play several
notes and sounds simultaneously. Most phone manufacturers talk about
polyphonic ringtones or poly tones. Motorola often calls these high
quality ringtones for MIDI ringtones. Sagem talks about Hi-Fi ringtones
and Sony Ericsson uses the word melodies.
Motorola Base Tracks (groovetunes) are special polyphonic ringtones which you can edit. Nokia also has
their own special ringtones called True tones, which allows users
to have songs, nature sounds and special effects to alert them of
an incoming call.
