3G Audio ringtones
3G audio ringtones are full-length ringtones or music files. The format of 3G audio ringtones can be MP3, AAC or any other music files. 3G stands for for third-generation mobile telephone technology and 3G ringtones means ringtones that are downloaded via 3G.
Japan was propably the first country which introduced 3G and 3G audio ringtones and music downloads on a large scale. 3G networks have high data rates and this enables downloads of full-lenght ringtones and sound tracks.
In 2003 people in Japan could download 20 to 30 second long parts of songs in MPEG format (called Chaku-Uta) to their cell phones and the next year (October 2004) full song downloads (Chaku-uta-full) were introduced.
The Japanese Chaku Uta Full format is a 48 kbit/s AAC (MPEG-4 AAC) and the size of one such audio3G ringtone is about 1.5 MB. Audio3G ringtones or AAC files are also supported by Apple´s iTunes. Depending on the AAC profile and the MP3 encoder you are using, AAC ringtones (96 kbit/s) can give nearly the same or even better quality ringtones than 128 kbit/s MP3. Not only cell phones, but also other music players and the Sony PSP support MP3 and AAC music files.
Audio3G ringtones in Europe
In 2005 many European mobile operators entered into partnerships music entertainment companies to supply full-length audio3g ringtones directly to customers on 3G networks. The price for audio3G ringtones in 2005 were from 1 to 3 euros depending on country and operator. |
