The AAC Audio File and Ringtone Format
The AAC and AAC+ audio formats are popular cell phone audio formats. AAC (Advanced audio coding) is the successor to MP3 for audio coding at medium to high bit rates.
In terms of sound quality and data efficiency, AAC beats the popular MP3 format. AAC sound files encoded at lower bitrates (96 Kbps) can sound as good or better than MP3s encoded at higher bitrates (128 Kbps).
This makes the AAC files suitable for ringtones and as a mobile music file format.
Apple uses the AAC format in the iTunes Music Store. File extension for AAC is ".M4A".
The MPEG-4 audio coding algorithm family used in AAC spans the range from low bit-rate speech coding (2 kbits/second) to high-quality audio coding (64 kbits/s per channel and higher). AAC has the sampling frequencies between 8 Hz and 96 kHz (compared to MP3 that has16 Hz to 48 kHz).
