MP3 Audio Files

MP3 is a popular audio and music file format and stand for MPEG audio Layer-3 and was designed to reduce the amount of data required to represent audio. The MP3 format was invented and standardised in 1991 in Germany. The audio files recorded in MP3 format are saved with the .mp3 extension.

A 4-minute CD track in MP3 format can be stored in a file that is 3.5MB - 5MB.

The AAC (Advanced audio coding) audio format (MPEG-4) is the successor of the MP3 (MPEG-3) format.

MP3 Ringtones

The MP3 audio format was not originally developed for cell phones and ringtones. Nowadays many mobile phones and most of the music mobiles support MP3 music files and ringtones.

Free MP3 ringtones

The internet is full of free MP3 music, songs and ringtones. You should note that many free MP3 ringtones available on the internet can be illegal and/or subject to some copyright restrictions. More about piracy and illegal MP3 files.

Converting MP3´s

If you convert MP3 music to MIDI the quality of the sound format will be much lower than for a MP3 or WAV music file. A format change from MP3 or WAV to MIDI is going to degrade the recording.

Converting MP3 to AAC doesn´t degrade the quality that much and you can do this with iTunes for free. Locked Phones and MP3 Music

Note that some operators have "locked" their cell phones so that you cannot transfer or upload MP3 music to your mobile. With an unlocked MP3 compatible phone listening to MP3 music or using themusic files as ringtones should be possible.

If you have a "locked" phone and cannot upload MP3 ringtones to it you could try to convert the MP3 files to some other format and see if that help. Converting MP3 ringtones can be done with a ringtone converter / editor. As an example Apples iTunes can convert MP3 music to AAC files that many cell phones support. Some phones also support WAV and MIDI formats.
