Ringback tones

Ringback tones let users customize and replace the busy sounds callers hear when they dial a users number. Instead of hearing a "ring-ring" before someone picks up their phone, a caller hear music. Ringback tones were pioneered by SK Telecom of South Korea around 2002.

The ringback tones reside in the network, so callers from any type of phone can hear them. So the big difference between ringtones and ringback tones is that ringback tones are not phone dependent. This means any phone, whether cell phone or a landline, can use ringback tones. This is because phone operators control ringback tones on the backend. A ringback tone is not stored on a cell phone like a ringtone is; rather, it is stored on a server on the carrier end.
